ENERGY
For Solo Unaccomanied Viola

Program Notes-
The idea of ENERGY was inspired by my first ever sip of an energy drink. Immediately after I
took a sip, I could feel the rush of caffeine enter my system. This feeling is imitated in the opening gesture of the piece and represents each sip of the beverage. This newfound energy lends itself to a
powerful, dynamic, and unpredictable melody accomplished by intertwining and juxtaposing different
themes and ideas throughout the piece. As the piece continues, and more caffeine is consumed, the boosts of energy run shorter and less dynamic as the caffeine has less of an effect on the system. This piece was written in conjunction with the 2023 Frost School of Music Viola Project, and to be premiered by João Felipe de Fraga.
